The Walk
Luke 9:23-9:62
(Luke 9:23 KJV) And he said to them all, If any man will come after me,
let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
(Luke 9:62 KJV) And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to
the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
I believe that God calls all of His people to walk with Him. In this
outline we lay out seven kinds of personal walk we have with Christ. If
our desire is to be more like Him then we must walk and learn of Him
daily. Not just in the Sunday morning service. We need to be attached to
Him. That is most likely why He said what He did in Matt 11: 28 Come
unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you
rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly
in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is
easy, and my burden is light. The Christian walk is much like riding a
bicycle; we are either moving forward or falling off.
I. We must walk in the Light.
(John 8:12 KJV) Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light
of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall
have the light of life.
JESUS IS THE LIGHT AND HE SHOULD LIVE IN US.
A. This takes us off the Broadway that leads to destruction to the
narrow way that leads to life.
B. Matt. 7:13 Enter ye in by the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and
broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many are they that
enter in thereby. 14 For narrow is the gate, and straitened the way,
that leadeth unto life, and few are they that find it.
C. Walking in the light give us the assurance of sins forgiven.
(1 John 1:7 KJV) But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we
have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son
cleanseth us from all sin.
II. We walk the walk of a newness of life.
(Rom 6:4 KJV) Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
that like as Christ was raised up from the dead glory by the of the
Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
A. When we come to Christ we are changed from a sinner to a saint.
II Cor 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old
things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
You must live with people to know their problems, and live with God in
order to solve them. -- P. T. Forsyth,
III. We must walk the Walk of Faith.
(2 Cor 5:7 KJV) (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
A. We can only learn to walk the walk of faith by living in His Word.
B. Godʼs Word often refers to the Christian experience as a walk, seldom
as a run, and never as a mad dash. - Steven J. Cole
IV. We must walk in the Spirit.
(Gal 5:16 KJV) This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not
fulfil the lust of the flesh.
A. We should wait on the Lord daily for a fresh anointing.
B. I believe we can receive a refilling of His Holy Spirit every day.
V. We then strife to walk the Walk of Love.
(Eph 5:2 KJV) And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath
given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet
smelling savour.
A. Learning more of Jesus will help us to not only love God with all our
hearts but it is the only way we can love our neighbor as ourselves.
Mark 12: 30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and
with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength:
this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
VI. Walk in Wisdom.
(Col 4:5 KJV) Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the
time.
A. There is earthly wisdom that comes with age and experience.
B. There is divine wisdom that comes from God. This is what we need in
the walk of wisdom.
(James 1:5 KJV) If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that
giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given
him.
VII. The final walk we will find ourselves walking in His New Kingdom.
(Rev 3:4 KJV) Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not
defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they
are worthy.
(Rev 3:5 KJV) He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white
raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I
will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
A. What a day that will be when we see Jesus!
B. To follow Christ is to walk with Him first into the presence of His
Father. If that is so, we had better know how to act in the divine
presence now (in this present life) and then (in the life everlasting).
Ultimately, we will be there a long, long time. -- Gordon MacDonald
