Come and Dine!
One of my favorite memories as a child was when I would be playing and
mom would call me home for supper! In the message of the disciples
fishing and Jesus calling to them to come and dine we find the Word
teaching us many lesions in this sermon outline.
I. John 21:3
Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They
say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a
ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. (Moses at age 40- his own strength tried to deliver the children of
Israel but failed. It was not God's time nor was Moses prepared to do
so. ) A. People today are following other people out of the timing of God. God
always has a timetable. (Jews and Israel are God's spiritual clock.) 1. God's people often run beating the air and nothing is
accomplishedce. 2. Many church buildings are being built but where are the
converts?
II. Jesus appears on the scene when the disciples gave up catching
fish. - John 21:4 (KJV) But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the
shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. A. Jesus asks the question and then gives the answer. - John 21:5-6 (KJV) 5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any
meat? They answered him, No. 6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship,
and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to
draw it for the multitude of fishes. B. God plan for us can look foolish to us.
C. The plan of salvation looks foolish to the world but to us it is the
power of God. D. We often think we know better. We often question God, How can you
catch fish in the broad daylight? 1. Fishnets at this time were made of ropes. Fish would see
the net in daylight that is why they fished at night. a. They obeyed. They cast therefore, and now they were not able
to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
III. (The God of Abundance. 3 John 2, John 10:) dragging the net with
fishes. - John 21:9 (KJV) As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a
fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. A: God really does not need us, we need Him. He can get along with out us
but we can not get along with out Him He already had fish and fresh
bread to boot. 10 Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. 11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an
hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not
the net broken. B. Again the God of Abundance is working and providing. 12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst
ask him, Who art thou? Knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish
likewise.
IV. What was Jesus teaching them? - Mat 4:19 (KJV) And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you
fishers of men. A The nearest thing the heart of God is soul winning.
V. Then another important lesson was to follow breakfast. 15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of
Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord;
thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. A. If we really love Him we will care for God's people and for their
souls. 16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest
thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He
saith unto him, Feed my sheep. 1. Important He asks about the mature sheep. We need to care
for the Church of Jesus Christ. We need to help build it up and not tear
it down. The anti Christ forces is at work trying to destroy the nation
because we have tried to evangelize the world. 17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas,
lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third
time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all
things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my
sheep. B. Do not get tired of being faithful, the call of Jesus requires us to
keep on loving the sheep no matter what. (Gal 6:10 KJV) As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all
men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
VI. He wants to make you and I to be 'Fishers of men.' - Mat 4:19 (KJV) And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you
fishers of men.
